What Does Child Sexual Abuse Have to Do With Online Safety?

Technology can be a great tool for staying connected, providing educational resources, or for entertainment. It’s no secret, however, that there are downsides to unmonitored access to technology. Online spaces potentially give children access to sexually explicit materials and becomes another way for other people–known or unknown to you–to interact with your child. Additionally, a child’s screen time may keep them from doing other social activities. In fact,

  • A child who is lonely or socially isolated is more vulnerable to being groomed (both offline and online).

  • Exposure to sexually explicit material may be harmful and confusing to a child.

  • Online media often misrepresents sexual intimacy, sending youth conflicting messages about consent, gender roles, and sexual violence.2

  • 34% of youth internet users experience unwanted exposure to sexual material.3
